FAQs

General Practice Questions

  • Yes. We offer both telehealth and in-person sessions for therapy and Executive Functioning Coaching. Virtual sessions are private, secure, and designed to deliver the same quality of care as in-person meetings.

  • Yes, for most patients, virtual therapy and coaching work beautifully and can offer convenience to those who live outside the area or manage busy schedules. With that said, some patients have difficulty being fully present or paying attention during virtual sessions. Speak with your clinician to determine the best modality for you.

  • Slate Psychology does not bill insurance directly. However, we provide superbills for psychotherapy, coaching, and assessments, which you can submit to your out-of-network insurance benefits for potential reimbursement.

  • CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes describe the services provided during your sessions or evaluations. These codes are required by insurance companies to process reimbursement. We’ll include all necessary codes and relevant diagnoses on your superbill.

  • Please notify us at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a cancellation fee. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice and no shows are subject to the full session or evaluation fee.

  • Yes. You’re welcome to reach out between sessions if something comes up. Just send a message, and your clinician will respond as soon as possible. While routine communication is encouraged, responses from your clinician may not be immediate. For emergencies, such as having acute thoughts of harm to yourself or others, please go to your nearest emergency room or call 911.

Assessment Services

  • Most evaluations take around five hours. The exact timing depends on your needs and the complexity of your concerns.

    • Sleep well the night before and eat a balanced meal

    • Bring glasses, hearing aids, or any assistive devices you normally use

    • Provide a list of current medications and relevant medical or academic records

    • Discuss caffeine and prescription stimulant medication use with your clinician prior to an evaluation, as these may alter results

  • Slate Psychology is an “out-of-network provider.” Many insurance plans reimburse part or all of the cost if the assessment is deemed medically necessary. We’ll provide a superbill with all required CPT codes, relevant diagnoses, and documentation.

  • While some practices effectively offer virtual evaluations, we feel strongly that assessment data is most accurate when collected in person. In-person sessions allow for fewer distractions, facilitate better observation of nonverbal cues, and provide access to specialized testing materials essential for accurate diagnosis.

Therapy and Coaching Services

  • Psychotherapy helps you explore emotional and psychological challenges like anxiety, depression, or trauma. Executive Functioning Coaching is more structured and goal-oriented, focused on building practical skills like time management, organization, and focus.

  • Psychotherapy sessions are typically 45 or 60 minutes. Executive Functioning Coaching sessions are generally 45 minutes. Longer sessions are available if needed.

  • Yes. To remain under our care, we require that all therapy clients meet with their clinician at least once per month. We offer 30-, 45-, and 60-minute sessions based on your preference and needs. This minimum ensures continuity of care and helps us maintain a meaningful therapeutic relationship.

  • The number of sessions is decided on a case-by-case basis and a person’s treatment goals. According to research, therapy requires 12-16 weeks at minimum to be effective-and we follow the data! Executive functioning coaching is usually more brief. Most patients are able to gain the executive functioning skills they need in 6-8 weeks.
